The author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie talks about “The Danger of the Single Story”. Their critic talks about how the mass media tells stories that create a single narrative of a culture, countries, conflict and people, and this narration makes the others possible stories and imaginaries invisible. So, how to tell a non single story? “The Checkpoint” project is an exploration to develop devices that build up the experience of a story and not a story itself, the user creates a different telling every time that interacts with these dispositives.
The narratives that are explore follow my participation in the creation Art laboratory “Abrir Monte '', which gathered people across Colombia to share, thinking and create about the Colombia violence and how this is expressed through familie memories and territory.The final result was an artbook, in which I took part with a text of five micro stories, that are related to the memories of my family on the farm “El Reten”, that in english means “The Checkpoint”, name given by the Colombian Guerillas.
As the war in Colombia has been long and the government has failed to recognize it, it is not possible for the victims to clarify the real facts related to violence that they had experienced. These five short stories are an attempt to recover this lost truth, not as forensic or investigative reconstruction, instead as a collection of memories that are related to the experience of living in a place in conflict.
